Research Facilities

The Department offers research facilities in the fields of molecular microbiology, medical and general bacteriology, medical and general virology, mycology, immunology and serology.

Current research interests

Diagnosis, management and treatment of endocarditis; cloning of streptococci and enterococci; peptide studies on Helicobacter pylori; cloning of Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus, - studies on fungal heat-shock proteins; typing of Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus and Bordetella pertussis by pulsed field gel electrophoresis and by the polymerase chain reaction; development of new diagnostic tests for whooping cough and invasive fungal diseases (The National Reference Centre for whooping cough, recognised by WHO, is on site); antimicrobials – resistance mechanisms and genetic determinants; air-borne and gastrointestinal infections; STD; Chlamydia; herpes group of viruses (CNS and cytomegalovirus infections); oncogenicity of papilloma viruses; measles; new antiviral agents; rapid virus diagnosis; disease progression in HIV infection; viral infections of the eye and viral infections of the immunocompromised.
